Double Standard Exists Between Jon Jones & Conor McGregor
Double Standard Exists Between Jon Jones & Conor McGregor
Jon Jones has been in the headlines again after being charged with battery of a cocktail waitress at a gentlemen club, and as is the case whenever Jones makes the news for something negative, it did not take long for the dogpile to form from the MMA community. Another UFC superstar who often finds himself in the headlines for misconduct is “The Notorious” Conor McGregor. One of the legal incidents McGregor was in the headlines for this year was being under investigation for sexual assault.
On the most recent episode of The Hollywood Beatdown, Tyron Woodley refused to cast judgment on Jon Jones until the facts are in and believes there is a stark contrast in how fans react to Jon Jones whenever he finds himself in trouble versus how McGregor is treated:
“We gonna act like Conor doesn’t do that every week? And we still want to put him on every fight card; he’s the biggest star. The second Jon Jones does something…” Woodley said. “I’m defending the fact that we selectively throw people under the bus. Conor has done way worse things than Jon, and he’s glorified and praised as some Scarface of our sport. So I’m not gonna be too hard on Jon (when) I don’t even know the details.”
Whether Conor McGregor has done “way worse things’ than Jon Jones can be debated, but it is true that both fighters have developed a pattern of finding themselves in hot water, whether it be accusations or confirmed events. Tyron Woodley went on to clarify that his position is not that Jon Jones should be given a pass for his missteps nor that he is assuming Jones is innocent in the battery case, but that McGregor is treated differently when such accusations/events hit the news. Woodley also stressed that he is not defending Jon Jones, but rather addressing hypocrisy and selective outrage:
“I’m not gonna give him a pass, either, because it ain’t my job to give the pass out,” Woodley clarified. “All I’m saying is this: Let’s get all the details first, but let’s not forget there’s a lot of bullshit that go on in our sport that we glorify.”
Does Tyron Woodley have a point?
Is there a double standard that exists in the public treatment of Conor
McGregor and Jon Jones?
Michael Bisping Believes UFC Wouldn’t Allow Khabib vs. Mayweather
Michael Bisping Believes UFC Wouldn’t Allow Khabib vs. Mayweather
Michael Bisping feels Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Floyd Mayweather won’t ever come to fruition.
Nurmagomedov and Mayweather have both hinted at doing battle inside the boxing ring. “The Eagle’s” manager Ali Abdelaziz has even claimed that Mayweather is broke and begging for a bout with Nurmagomedov. Mayweather last competed in an exhibition bout against Tenshin Nasukawa back in Dec. 2018.
Bisping Doubts Khabib vs. Mayweather Takes Place
Speaking to Omnisport, Bisping said that the UFC is likely to prevent Nurmagomedov from facing Mayweather (via Sporting News).
“Mayweather would win, we all know that, but it’s always interesting to see somebody at the top of mixed martial arts taking on a boxer. But I don’t think that’s gonna happen, I really don’t. Mayweather talks about it, Khabib talks about it, I don’t think the UFC will allow it because we’re all under contract with the UFC.”
Bisping said that while Conor McGregor was the exception, he isn’t the rule.
“They broke the mold in doing that with McGregor, I think if they continue to do that and form a pattern then more and more fighters are going to want to do that and it starts creating legal problems with contracts and things like that.”
Nurmagomedov is scheduled to take on Dustin Poirier in a lightweight title unification bout. The fight will headline UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi on Sept. 7.

Tyron Woodley Responds to Backlash for Masvidal Pics
Tyron Woodley Responds to Backlash for Masvidal Pics
Tyron Woodley was recently subjected to criticism from fans and fighters alike for taking pictures chumming up with Jorge Masvidal after Masvidal knocked out his best friend, Ben Askren, in five seconds at UFC 239. Granted, the fighters who made the criticism were Colby Covington and Dillon Danis, who are both known for trolling fighters via the internet regularly, but there was general backlash in Woodley’s direction on the internet, with some believing the pictures were in bad taste and demonstrated a lack of loyalty to Askren. On the latest installment of The Hollywood Beatdown, Tyron Woodley set the record straight about the photos:
“I’m a part of First Round
Management, OK?” Woodley began. “Jorge Masvidal’s also a part of First Round
Management, and so is Jon Jones. So surprisingly, me, Jon, and Jorge have some
of the same sponsors. So we were doing a commercial….and then Jorge Masvidal
was in a shoot with me. We trained so many years together.
“Now I wasn’t like, ‘Yeah, I’m so happy you knocked my guy the fuck out,” Woodley continued. “I’m not thinking that. But I’m thinking like, ‘Am I gonna be mean to him?’ No, I have to do a shoot with him for six hours. We had a four-to-six hour shoot together, we gotta be around each other. I want to have good energy to make it well. A couple pictures were taken, boom, boom, you guys all got on these shirts, looked dope, let’s get the product placement. But then I didn’t think about it: ‘Damn, he knocked out my homie.’ And now, everybody on the internet like, ‘Oh, my god. You’re not a good friend, dah, dah, dah, dah.”
What are your thoughts on the
criticism Tyron Woodley received for posing with photos with Jorge Masvidal
following Masvidal’s KO of Ben Askren at UFC 239?

Michael Bisping Believes Israel Adesanya Could Give Jon Jones Problems
Michael Bisping Believes Israel Adesanya Could Give Jon Jones Problems
Israel Adesanya and Jon Jones have had a feud going on for quite some time now. The two have been calling each other out in interviews, and should “The Last Stylebender” win the middleweight title, having them fight could make some sense.
Should the two of them fight, Michael Bisping believes Adesanya could give Jones some serious problems. He also believes it would be a very close fight, which he revealed on his Believe You Me podcast.
“I like what Israel’s doing. I like that he’s calling out Jon Jones. The fact that he’s even being put in the same sentence as him is great marketing. It’s a great strategy, calling out the biggest, best name possible,” Bisping said (as transcribed by BJPenn.com). That’s awesome, I applaud that. And who knows? The fight might happen down the line. If Adesanya beats Whittaker, which is a very possible outcome, then you might see Jones vs. Adesanya because Jones is running out of good competition. So that might be a fight that happens down the line.
“I can see Israel giving him problems. It wouldn’t be fair [to] Jones to sit here and say Adesanya would beat him,” he continued. “But I think it’d be a good fight. I think it’d be more competitive than what people think. I agree with your point [co-host Luis Gomez], I think he does fight to his level. I think it’d be a pretty close fight. I’d see it, I’d pay for it, I’d buy that pay-per-view.”
Whether or not they fight is to be seen. But, it would no doubt be a very interesting fight.
Dana White Says Conor McGregor Behind Tony Ferguson For Lightweight Title Shot
Dana White Says Conor McGregor Behind Tony Ferguson For Lightweight Title Shot
Conor McGregor has been clamoring for a rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov ever since he lost at UFC 229. Although the Irishman has not fought since then, he still believes he is the next worthy contender.
But, according to UFC president, Dana White, he says who is next in line for the lightweight title after Nurmagomedov fights Dustin Poirier.
“Ferguson is the one who’s next in line,” White said to TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter (h/t BJPENN.com). “Then it would be Conor.”
For why it is Ferguson over McGregor. Well, White says they go by the rankings and “El Cucuy” is ranked ahead of the Irishman.
Ferguson is also on a 12-fight winning streak with his last loss coming back in 2012 and has still yet to fight for the undisputed title. He no doubt deserves the next shot, and the fight against Nurmagomedov is one many fans want to see. Whether or not it happens it to be seen.
But, White says it will be Ferguson getting the next shot. However, money always talks and having the Irishman fight for the title next would no doubt do big business.

BJ Penn Promised Me He’ll Retire After Lentz Fight
BJ Penn Promised Me He’ll Retire After Lentz Fight
After BJ Penn’s seventh consecutive loss in May, Dana White vowed that we had seen the last of BJ Penn in the UFC Octagon. Two months later, Dana White confirmed that BJ Penn is set to make his return later this year against Nik Lentz. So what changed? (Transcript via MMA Fighting):
“Cause he terrorized me for freaking a week and wouldn’t stop texting me for three days straight,” White said at the UFC 240 post fight press conference. “Talked me into it. We have a deal now — win, lose or draw, this is BJ Penn’s last fight.
“I won’t give him another fight.
It’s very clear between us that there won’t be another fight no matter what. If
all you people who are concerned are doctors, give me a call. If you’re not,
then mind your business.”
White did not clarify if the deal
was that it would be Penn’s last fight in the UFC or if Penn assured he would
never fight again elsewhere, but based on the few details White disclosed, it
would seem that Penn has assured White of his retirement from the entire sport
following his next fight:
“I’ve voiced my concerns. I’ve known BJ Penn since he was he was like 19 years old. BJ is going to do what BJ wants to do,” White stated. “I’ve had a very crazy relationship with him and his family for the last 20 years. BJ walked me through a million reasons why he needs this fight and why he has to have it. He talked me into it. You guys know me, when I’m in, I’m in and I’m going to do what I’m going to do. So we’re doing this.
“He’s promised me that win, lose
or draw, he will retire after this fight. We’ll see if he keeps his promise.”
But regardless of if he fights again or not, one thing is guaranteed, BJ Penn has one final UFC fight remaining in his career, White assures:
“He won’t fight here though, that
I can guarantee you,” White said. “We won’t be sitting here doing this again,
that I promise you.”
Do you believe BJ Penn will fight again after his upcoming bout against Nik Lentz?
Cris Cyborg Goes Off on Dana White for Bullying her
Cris Cyborg Goes Off on Dana White for Bullying her
Cris Cyborg’s future with the UFC is uncertain right now as she has to make a big decision that will impact her MMA career.
The former UFC women’s featherweight champion just completed her UFC contract as she fought out the last fight on the deal that she as with the Las Vegas-based promotion.
She did so when she scored a unanimous decision over Felicia Spencer in the co-headliner of the UFC 240 pay-per-view event. This fight took place on Saturday night (July 27, 2019) from the Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Coming in and even more out of this fight, speculation as to what she’ll do is a hot topic. Many believe that if she signs a new deal then she would get a rematch against the two-division champion Amanda Nunes.
Cris Cyborg Goes Off on Dana White
However, it appears that due to a fractured relationship with UFC President Dana White may have an impact on whether a deal gets made.
“We have a lot of issues, me and the UFC,” Cyborg told MMA Junkie. “Media and people don’t see a lot of things inside but we have a lot of things to work to continue to stay (in UFC) Everybody knows I don’t have the best and greatest relationship with UFC, I don’t have the best relationship with Dana White. He’s bullied me around, bullied me on the Internet and I’m suffering bullying everywhere because of this. I have a daughter, I have a father and I don’t think it’s nice and he’s never, ever said, ‘I’m sorry’ or told me anything about this. It’s going to continue, it’s not finished.”
It also doesn’t help that Cyborg believes White is hurting her brand by claiming that she doesn’t want to fight Nunes for a second time despite the fact that she is the second biggest female star the promotion has behind the champion.
“Like to say I’m scared of Amanda Nunes, to say I don’t want to fight her, this is a liar. I text him after the fight saying I want the rematch. This don’t help grow my brand. It damages my brand and if I’m going to work for a promotion I don’t want someone to damage by brand. I want to work together and we’re going to have to take a little time and see.”

Yair Rodriguez vs. Jeremy Stephens Headlines UFC on ESPN+ 17
Yair Rodriguez vs. Jeremy Stephens Headlines UFC on ESPN+ 17
According to an ESPN report, Yair Rodriguez is set to be making his 2019 debut in the fourth quarter when he takes on UFC veteran Jeremy Stephens at UFC on ESPN+ 17 (UFC Mexico City) on September 21. The contest will serve as the main event.
The last time we saw Yair Rodriguez in action was when he executed arguably the greatest knockout in the history of the UFC with his spectacular reverse elbow to Chan Sung Jung to win a fight in which he was literally one second away from losing on the judges’ scorecards. It may not be possible for Rodirguez to duplicate such a KO, but as long as he duplicates the win, I’m sure El Pantara will find satisfaction in that. Rodriguez has won an impressive nine of his last ten fights and currently boasts a record of 11-2 and is the 7th ranked featherweight in the UFC.
Jeremy Stephens is a man who needs no introduction. We all know who this guy is. He’s a man with 19 of his 28 wins by knockout who will be more than up to the challenge of facing another prolific striker in Yair Rodriguez. At 33 years old, Jeremy Stephens has 44 professional fights and has been competing in the UFC for 12 long years. Stephens has had his share of ups and downs at 28-16, and he will look to return to the upswing after coming off back-to-back losses to Jose Aldo and Zabit Magomedsharipov. Stephens is currently ranked one spot beneath Yair Rodriguez at #8.
With the addition of this bout,
the current UFC on ESPN+17 lineup is as follows:
Main Event: Yair Rodriguez vs. Jeremy Stephens
Carla Esparza vs. Alexa Grasso
Brandon Moreno vs. Askar Askarov
Sijara Eubanks vs. Bethe Correia
Angela Hill vs. Istela Nunes
Jose Alberto Quinonez vs. Carlos
Huachin
Who wins this featherweight main
event? Yair Rodriguez or Jeremy Stephens?

Miesha Tate Proposes Public Negotiations Between Cyborg/UFC
Miesha Tate Proposes Public Negotiations Between Cyborg/UFC
Miesha Tate believes she has the solution to the dramatic negotiations between Cris Cyborg and the UFC.
Cris Cyborg will be facing Felicia Spencer this Saturday at UFC 240, but there is another opponent the UFC would like to see her face and that is reigning women’s featherweight and bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes. Dana White claims that the interest exists on the promotion’s end as well as with champion Amanda Nunes, but not with Cris Cyborg. Cyborg has refuted these comments and also rebuked White for making such comments. Dana White recently doubled down on his claim, stating that while Cyborg is not afraid of Amanda Nunes, she is afraid of losing again to her. On a recent episode of MMA Tonight, Miesha Tate shared her interpretation of what appears to be a bit of a paradox:
“Well, I think that Dana is trying to distinguish between her being afraid as a person, person-to-person level or fighter-to-fighter level, which I think he’s giving her credit that she’s not afraid as a fighter.
“It means if no one is watching,
she’s not afraid of Amanda. But if the whole world is watching and it goes on
her career, affects her legacy, she’s afraid of making the wrong career choice
is what he’s trying to say. That’s how I interpreted the afraid/not afraid.”
Miesha Tate went on to state that she is placing her trust with Cris Cyborg and does not believe she is afraid of Amanda Nunes on either count:
“I listened to Cyborg on Ariel
Helani’s show. And she, from my perspective…she’s always a very open book…she
didn’t sound afraid whatsoever. She really has been pushing heavily for that
rematch. She really wants that rematch. So I believe that. So I’m not even sure
I necessarily believe what Dana is saying career trajectory-wise, being afraid.
It didn’t sound like she was afraid on either level. It sounds like she really,
really wants this rematch.”
Finally, Miesha Tate proposes a
solution to put an end to all the back-and-forth conflicting accounts between
the UFC, Nunes, and Cyborg:
“So I say we sit them all in front
of the camera, all three of them, and we pull out a contract, and we say, OK,
then. After she beats Felicia…post-fight conference, it’s the perfect place,”
Tate said. “ Like, hey, here’s the contract. Let the rest of the world see who
has what to say about what.”
Do you believe we will see a
rematch between Amanda Nunes and Cris Cyborg?
Jimmy Uso Arrested Again for DUI
Jimmy Uso Arrested Again for DUI

Jimmy Uso was arrested for driving under the influence near Pensacola, Florida early Thursday morning, around 3 AM. As of this posting he is still behind bars, but his bond was only set at $1,000.
Jimmy was arrested earlier this year, in February, after allegedly getting into a drunken dispute with cops in Detroit. They claim Jimmy “squared up” as if he was going to fight the police. He was arrested for disorderly conduct and obstruction.
Ironically, it was just this week on Raw that John Cena brought up Jimmy’s arrest where the former 6x Tag Team Champion was smiling about it. Talk about bad poor timing!
Cyborg’s Contract Irrelevant to Her Turning Down Nunes
Cyborg’s Contract Irrelevant to Her Turning Down Nunes
In case you haven’t heard, Cris Cyborg does not want to fight Amanda Nunes, or at least that is the narrative that Dana White has been spinning, this time perhaps more adamantly than ever. Dana White insists that his claim of Cyborg not wanting to fight Amanda Nunes is not uttered out of any hostility but is merely a statement of fact:
“Yeah, she’s mad at me again for some reason,” White said in a recent media scrum. “Listen, I am not saying anything negative about Cyborg. She does not want to fight Amanda Nunes. That is a fact. Why should she be mad at me because she doesn’t want to fight Amanda Nunes is beyond me.
“But I have no problem with Cris.
I said many times earlier when she first came in that there were obviously some
things that we had to squash and fix, and I thought we had done that. And I’ve
had a decent working relationship with her. Believe me, I’ve had much worse. I
have no ill will toward her. And when I say she doesn’t want to fight Amanda,
and I say that I don’t blame her, I’m not talking about her or being negative
toward her. These are facts.
“Amanda Nunes wants to fight Cyborg. We want to make the Amanda Nunes/Cyborg fight. Cyborg does not. That’s a fact.”
One theory floating around on what prevented a Cyborg/Nunes rematch is the contract negotiations between Cris Cyborg and the UFC, that perhaps Cyborg is not prepared to commit to a new deal with the promotion, and thus the promotion is unwilling to give essentially a free agent a shot at a world title. Dana White refuted this theory and continued to insist that the truth is much more linear: Cyborg simply does not want the fight.
“Then say that,” White responded to the theory of Cyborg wanting a new deal to fight Amanda Nunes. “Then say, ‘No, I don’t want to fight Amanda Nunes because I don’t want to sigh a new contract.’”
The implication in that statement is that Cyborg has never said any such thing, but instead has only rejected the fight without explanation. White even went a step further in saying that he would be willing to have Cyborg sign a one-fight deal with the UFC to fight Amanda Nunes because if Cyborg were to win, there is already a title clause in UFC contracts that prevents fighters from being a free agent while a UFC champion:
“Yeah, of course,” White said of his desire to
keep Cyborg in the UFC. “It’s not like we’re trying to chase her out of here.
We’re trying to get something done. We’re trying to get another fight. Or, if
she wanted to, she could do a one-fight deal and fight Amanda.”
Did this latest double-down of Dana White convince you that Cyborg truly does not want to fight Amanda Nunes again?

Win Or Lose At UFC 240, Frankie Edgar Is A UFC Hall of Famer • MMA News
Win Or Lose At UFC 240, Frankie Edgar Is A UFC Hall of Famer • MMA News
This Saturday night at UFC 240, Frankie Edgar is getting another chance to join the exclusive two-division champion club when he takes on Max Holloway. Edgar, the former UFC lightweight champion, will look to take Holloway’s belt and become the UFC featherweight champion, adding another milestone to his incredible UFC career.
Win or lose, though, Edgar has already proven himself to be one of the greatest fighters to ever step inside the Octagon. Regardless of what happens against Holloway this Saturday night in Edmonton, Alberta, Edgar is a future UFC Hall of Famer, and will go down as one of the best to ever put the gloves on.
What is perhaps most amazing about Edgar’s career is how long he’s been at the top of the game for. He made his UFC debut back in 2007, and for the past 12 years has been a perennial top-five fighter in both the UFC lightweight and featherweight division. That sort of longevity in a sport that’s known as a young man’s game is something that makes Edgar truly special.
It’s hard to believe, but it was back in 2010 when Edgar first defeated BJ Penn to become the UFC lightweight champion in an upset at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi. He then defended the belt against Penn in a rematch at UFC 118 in Boston, and then defended it two more times against Gray Maynard. Edgar lost his belt to Benson Henderson back in 2012 and that was the last time he was a champion in the UFC, but he’s still remained a top title contender in the seven years since then.
In early 2013, Edgar decided to make the move down to featherweight and take on long-time champion Jose Aldo for the belt at 145lbs. He fought Aldo tooth-and-nail for five rounds at UFC 156, but came up a bit short in his quest for the belt. After five straight more wins, Edgar got another chance to fight Aldo at UFC 200. Once again, he dropped a decision to the champion. But it didn’t stop him from wanting to reach his goal of becoming a double champ in the UFC.
Since the second loss to Aldo, Edgar has gone 3-1, and he got himself another title shot against Holloway after beating Cub Swanson in his last fight. Now 37, Edgar is not the young buck he once was. But he’s still a very quality fighter who is the de facto No. 1 contender in a division that Holloway has essentially cleaned out already. With Holloway beating almost every other featherweight contender worthy of a title shot, it makes sense to give Edgar another crack at the gold.
Even late in his career, Edgar is still one of the best in the world. It’s amazing how long and storied of a career he’s had, one that’s had so many ups and downs. But through it all, Edgar has persevered and managed to remain relevant as a top contender in the UFC for over a decade. In a sport that chews fighters up and spits them out, it’s incredible how long Edgar has remained a top fighter for.
Edgar is already well on his way to becoming a UFC Hall of Famer. Win or lose against Holloway, his standing as one of the greatest to ever step inside the Octagon is already locked up. But he still has his own personal goals to achieve, and being a rare two-division champion in the UFC is something he badly wants to do. This Saturday in the main event at UFC 240, Edgar gets his chance to become just that. The UFC has given him the opportunity he deserves, and now it’s up to Edgar to shock the world once again and take the belt from Holloway.

Chris Weidman vs. Dominick Reyes Headlines UFC Boston • MMA News
Chris Weidman vs. Dominick Reyes Headlines UFC Boston • MMA News
It looks like Chris Weidman already has his chance to settle his online beef with Dominick Reyes.
Earlier today, Ariel Helwani reported that the UFC was considering booking former middleweight champ Weidman against the undefeated Reyes. Weidman confirmed he would move up to light heavyweight to Helwani earlier this year. There were apparently some hurdles still to be cleared for the fight, but it appears those have been bypassed.
According to a report from ESPN.com, multiple sources have confirmed Weidman will take on Reyes in the main event of October 18’s UFC Fight Night event from Boston, Massachusetts. The fight will reportedly headline the event from the TD Garden. Verbal agreements are in place and bout contracts will be signed soon.
Reinventing A Once-Great Career
Weidman will look to reinvent his career at light heavyweight. He owns one of the most iconic knockouts in UFC history when he dethroned Anderson Silva with a historic left hook in July 2013. Weidman defended the title three times, but his recent run has left much to be desired. He was brutally knocked out by Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza in his last fight at UFC 230. The loss was Weidman’s fourth stoppage loss in five bouts. It was also yet another loss in a fight he was previously winning.
He’ll have no warm welcome to 205 pounds in Reyes. The undefeated prospect is ranked at No. 4 at light heavyweight. He’s coming off a controversial split decision win over former title contender Volkan Oezdemir earlier this year. ‘The Devastator’ has won all five of his UFC bouts to this point.
For Reyes, a fight with Weidman is a risk in the sense that it provides little more than name recognition in terms of his opponent. Weidman has always been a big middleweight but has no history in the division as of now. It’s tough to say if beating the former 185-pound champ will earn him his coveted title shot. Reyes could win and stay right where he is in the official rankings.
Will Chris Weidman defeat one of MMA’s top light heavyweights at UFC Boston?

Volkan Oezdemir vs. Ilir Latifi Moved To UFC Uruguay • MMA News
Volkan Oezdemir vs. Ilir Latifi Moved To UFC Uruguay • MMA News
Volkan Oezdemir and Ilir Latifi will not be sharing the Octagon at UFC Newark.
ESPN’s Brett Okamoto reported that Oezdemir vs. Latifi has been moved to UFC Uruguay. That event is scheduled for Aug. 10 and it’ll be headlined by a women’s flyweight title bout between champion Valentina Shevchenko and Liz Carmouche. The change is said to be due to visa issues. UFC officials later confirmed the move.
Oezdemir vs. Latifi was supposed to take place at UFC Stockholm last month. Latifi suffered a back injury, so the bout was scrapped.
It’s a crucial bout for both men. Oezdemir hasn’t won a bout since July 2017. He’ll be looking to avoid his fourth straight defeat. As for Latifi, he’s hoping to rebound from his unanimous decision loss to Corey Anderson back in December. The loss followed by inactivity saw Latifi slide down from the fifth spot to the ninth position on the UFC light heavyweight rankings.
UFC Uruguay will be held inside the Antel Arena in Montevideo, Uruguay. In addition to the main event and Oezdemir vs. Latifi, welterweights Vicente Luque and Mike Perry will collide. Undefeated featherweight prospect Rodolfo Vieira will go one-on-one with Humberto Bandenay.
Also featured on the main card will be heavyweight action between Ciryl Gane and Raphael Pessoa Nunes. UFC Uruguay will also see a featherweight clash between Enrique Barloza and Bobby Moffett.
Matt Serra Compares Jorge Masvidal To Conor McGregor • MMA News
Matt Serra Compares Jorge Masvidal To Conor McGregor • MMA News
Jorge Masvidal is now on a two-fight winning streak after knockout wins over Darren Till and Ben Askren.
Since “Gamebred’s” win over Askren, who gets the title shot next is something many are talking about. But, if former UFC welterweight champion, Matt Serra had any say, it would be the ATT-product getting the shot.
“I’ll tell ya, he definitely deserves to fight for that [UFC welterweight title],” Serra said on UFC Unfiltered (as transcribed by BJPENN.com). “I mean how can you deny that guy? Look what he’s done and look who he’s put away too. Talk about a guy that rises to the occasion. He goes over to London, he beats Darren Till. He beats ‘Cowboy’ in I believe it was ‘Cowboy’s’ hometown.”
Something else Serra is impressed about in Masvidal is the way he gets in fighters head. He says it is very similar to what Conor McGregor does, and in the early does of “Mystic Mac” Masvidal backs it up.
“Masvidal, I’ll tell ya in a way he gets in people’s heads like Conor McGregor does. Before he fought ‘Cowboy,’ he was talking to him backstage before they walked out. It was awesome because he backs the sh*t up. He’s a real dude man. I like seeing real dudes in there.”

Backstage News on How NXT Might Battle AEW Head to Head and What WWE Is Planning

The following article is part of our premium news section. If you’re interested in this news and you’re not a premium subscriber, why not give it a try? We put out breaking premium news and backstage news on a frequent basis that we can 100% confirm. If you ARE a premium member, welcome back! Thanks for helping us do what we do!
Thomas Fenton Reports:
I’m able to provide further updates to the story that WWE was strongly considering moving NXT to TV on Wednesdays. Originally, WWE was shopping the NXT property for a Wednesday night time slot, I’m told this was simply a matter of just getting the correct price for the property and that NBC Universal was not a true player in this piece. Leaving talks with NBC Universal , however, NBC Universal has gotten the green light to re-air Monday Night Raw. This was done for several reasons. First and foremost, this was done to gauge what kind of an audience a second airing of WWE programming could garner and further to gauge a price for another programming.
Going back to NXT, there are many questions that simply do not have definitive answers at this point. The idea is 2 fold, WWE has floated ideas in regards to NXT that are simply untrue. It isn’t so much an IF WWE will air NXT on FS1, the question is in what capacity and when will it debut? WWE simply will not run NXT against AEW. You might be asking, “Could WWE simply dissolve 205 Live into the other 3 brands and then add a few bigger name roster talent to NXT?” Well, it’s not as simple as that. It has been long talked about that NXT would be its own brand and the development side of NXT would change. The problem is with the volume of talent, along with the amount of big name indy talent, there isn’t a lot of room for budding talent to grow. Sticking big name Indy talent from around the world with green talent makes for a great learning environment for the newbies. However, you don’t want to overexpose upcoming talent either.
Another issue WWE has had previously is in a developmental territory you can try gimmicks and even give them a full run, and then do the same on television later. Obviously, with NXT being filmed things have changed. Yet, it has also changed due to fans seeing the developmental talent sooner and judging them too early at times. WWE has needed a true developmental territory for a long time. Obviously, with their current relationship with Evolve, it does help and gives them a place for other talents to go and grow, but until it’s a true WWE property there isn’t control.
Going back into the NXT situation, television is going to be completely different. Eventually, it will be a 2-hour live broadcast and will be in venues similar to the ones AEW is looking to run on Wednesday nights. Eventually, NXT will have it’s own brand and roster, and be separate from developmental. NXT will become the third brand, officially, for WWE. It’s important to know this will be a long play for WWE, it isn’t right around the corner. Booking venues, and dates is a huge issue, and touring dates would need to be changed. It’s not to say this cannot be done, however, it is a large hurdle to jump. WWE would need to further expedite the expansion of a developmental; whether that is Evolve becoming what NXT is now or branding the developmental system differently.
WWE would also have to truly do a draft after SummerSlam moving into the fall for all the brands. These are things that need time and planning and it’s very likely too soon to pull the trigger. For the time being it is possible that NXT could run for 1 hour and add 1 hour of NXT UK. However, there is a hold in that as well. Investors and TV executives see things in black and white. If they see AEW outdrawing NXT, they won’t see it as AEW beating the “C-Show.” They’ll see it as AEW beating WWE in ratings. Plain and simple. That’s a PR nightmare WWE won’t risk. The real question is does NXT launch on FS1 with its own roster as it’s own brand in October or does WWE risk waiting until everything is set and all the moving pieces are done to air a show (or shows) that fans are programmed to watch at their convenience. Furthermore, WWE knows for NXT to be the alternative to “the alternative” aka AEW, they have to have an increased in-ring quality and sports presentation. The moving parts in this story are absolutely incredible, but more incredible is the speed at which everything is moving. Especially considering this is by all accounts one of the bigger projects WWE has taken on.
We also look back and when WWE announced that Eric Bishoff and Paul Heyman would head RAW and SDLive in the media release, and many questioned where Paul Leveque’s (Triple H) name was, even under the assumption it was a PR move. Could WWE have actually planned this so when NXT launches as a brand it will be Paul Leveque behind it? Time will tell, however, with Paul Leveque lined up to take over his name would not be attached to anything that has a possibility of falling, and all resources would be used to make sure whatever he is attached to moving forward is a success.
Thomas’s Take: From everyone I have spoke within the industry the expectation is that if there is a will there is a way and somehow WWE will execute this in the next 10 weeks, but that also because information came so quickly, and so late time wise it was more challenging for AEW to counter and this obviously was done by design. WWE knows they are in for a fight and it is undeniable in what by all accounts looks to be the next move. WWE will continue to use its resources, but not just monetary, their resources in relationships with others in the business to help them long term. It is more important than ever to have good relationships with other companies, 2019 is a crazy year and it is only getting started. “This is not the beginning of the end, this is not even the end of the beginning.”
Later this week I will discuss the pay structure in 2019 and why many companies are missing what is the most important thing today and tomorrow.

Myles Jury Says He Is Fighting Benson Henderson In Main Event Of Bellator Dublin • MMA News
Myles Jury signed with Bellator MMA last week and speaking on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show, he has announced his first fight.
Although he is coming off of two losses, Bellator has given “Fury” the main event spot at Bellator Dublin against Benson Henderson.
“I’m fighting Benson Henderson, September 27 main event in Dublin, Ireland,” Jury said. “They are giving me a main event fight right off tops, someone great like Benson. So I’m looking to make a splash and looking to make a splash real quick.”
Jury is 17-4 as a pro and coming off of two losses to Andre Fili and Chad Mendes. During his UFC run, he beat the likes of Diego Sanchez, Takanori Gomi, Michael Johnson, and Ramsey Nijem among others.
Henderson, meanwhile, is 27-8 as a pro and riding a three-fight winning streak. There, the former UFC champ beat Roger Huerta, Saad Awad, and most recently, Adam Piccolotti.
Bellator Dublin goes down on September 27 and was originally supposed to see James Gallagher main event the card. If that fight is off or now the co-main event is to be seen. But, the card also sees the return of Michael Page.
Ali Abdelaziz Says Khabib May Fight GSP Before Tony Ferguson
Ali Abdelaziz Says Khabib May Fight GSP Before Tony Ferguson
If Khabib Nurmagomedov defeats Dustin Poirier, then his team will likely be vying for a showdown with Georges St-Pierre.
Many believe that Tony Ferguson is the clear number one contender for the winner of Nurmagomedov vs. Poirier. With a 12-fight winning streak and not having lost a fight since May 2012, it’s easy to see why fans feel that way. Despite this, UFC president Dana White will not commit to who is next in line.
Khabib’s Manager Says GSP May Skip Ahead Of Ferguson
Nurmagomedov’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, spoke to TMZ Sports on a number of topics. One of them was on Nurmagomedov’s next move should he successfully defend his lightweight gold against Poirier on Sept. 7.
“At the end of the day, we’re fighting Dustin Poirier. He’s a true number one contender. You got the guy with the cheap glasses, “El Cucuy” [might be next in line]. You know, got a lot of killers in this weight division. You got my man Georges St-Pierre. He might be next too. I can see Georges fighting Khabib before Tony fights Khabib. But of course, Dustin Poirier is next.”
When asked if the St-Pierre fight still interests Nurmagomedov, Abdelaziz made his answer clear.
“100 percent. This is the number one interest fight for all of us. And at the end of the day, we will have to fight.”
Nurmagomedov vs. Poirier will headline UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi. It’ll be a title unification bout as Poirier holds interim lightweight gold. This will also be Nurmagomedov’s second title defense.

Michael Bisping Says He’d Put His Money On Amanda Nunes To Beat Henry Cejudo • MMA News
Michael Bisping Says He’d Put His Money On Amanda Nunes To Beat Henry Cejudo • MMA News
If Michael Bisping were a betting man, he’d put his money on Amanda Nunes defeating Henry Cejudo.
Nunes and Cejudo are UFC “champ-champs.” Nunes holds women’s featherweight and bantamweight gold, while Cejudo reigns as the bantamweight and flyweight king. Recently, “Triple C” joked about facing Nunes in a bid for her titles.
Bisping Would Put His Money Down On Nunes Over Cejudo
On a new edition of his Believe You Me podcast, Bisping said he’d probably bet on Nunes to best Cejudo.
“I like it. I mean I’m not for a woman fighting a man or beating a man up. I like what he’s saying, but I kinda wanna see Nunes. I think I’d put my money on Nunes in that fight. I honestly would. I think I would put my money on Amanda Nunes in that fight.”
The UFC Hall of Famer went on to explain why he’d give Nunes a good chance at beating Cejudo.
“Henry Cejudo is 5 foot 4. Amanda Nunes is 5 foot 8. I’m not saying she’s thick, but she’s big. She’s bigger than Henry Cejudo. She has knockout power. I’ve seen Cyborg spar with men and dominate men. I have seen Cyborg in the gym rolling with men and beating men. And I have seen Amanda Nunes go out there and punch Cyborg in the face and knock her flat on her face.”
Bisping went on to say that the bout will never happen, but that he’s “genuinely interested” to see it. Nunes is coming off a head kick knockout win over Holly Holm to successfully retain her 135-pound championship. Cejudo nabbed his bantamweight gold with a TKO over Marlon Moraes at UFC 238.

Thomas Fenton Reports:
During this past week’s Monday Night Raw, we saw the re-debut of Bray Wyatt after he attacked Finn Balor following Finn’s loss to Samoa Joe. The plan moving forward is to have Bray and Finn go one on one at SummerSlam and with interesting news first reported by Ryan Satin, is that Balor will be taking time off after SummerSlam. There was much speculation as to why this came to be and I reached out and was told this was planned, and not a negative thing. Finn will be back before the launch on FOX. The interesting timing, however, with just three weeks left for SummerSlam, will it be Bray or AJStyles and The Club that write Finn off.
The Raw Reunion was planned for sometime simply because they want to draw viewership numbers and to capitalize on a bigger audience. I would fully expect an unadvertised appearance of a NXT debut on the show.
Alexa Bliss took to social media after Raw to voice her displeasure of the Raw crowd. While I understand her frustration, the company did no favors for the women with the length and structure of the match.
There have been talks of potentially tying to get Daniel Cormier to be the special guest referee at Summerslam, at the time of writting I can not confirm how deep those talks were minus that it was brought up and discussed.
Mickie James had successful ACL knee surgury earlier this week and is on the road to recovery.
As we mentioned on the Sunday update, WWE was thrilled with not only the how Evolve came across on the network, but also the amount of views the show received was much more than expected. It is now considered an absolute home run.
WWE continues to eyeball and explore talent that previously may not a talent normally on their radar. This is a concentrated effort to lock up talent that may be beneficial to other companies. WWE has also looked at talent that AEW has used but that may not be under contract to them yet. I would also expect other promotions to do the same moving forward with talent.
Greg Hardy & His Fans Not All Mentally There • MMA News
Greg Hardy & His Fans Not All Mentally There • MMA News
If Juan Adams is successful in defeating Greg Hardy tonight at UFC San Antonio, that victory would deliver stacks of sweetness for Adams to indulge in, with one batch being the pleasures of silencing Greg Hardy’s salty fans. In fact, aside from Hardy’s domestic violence history and Adams believing Hardy did not earn his spot in the UFC, another reason for Adams’s contempt for the former NFL star is his toxic fan base:
“It’s one thing to get stuff from your
peers, it’s another thing to get stuff from very low-intelligence people that
don’t know anything about it. Every night, I’m hearing the same stuff,” Adams
said in a UFC San Antonio media scrum. ‘You should fight Greg Hardy’ or ‘you’re
afraid to fight Greg Hardy.’ Me, as a person, as a man, nobody wants to hear
that. Nobody wants to have their strength challenged like that.”
And in a recent interview with MMA Tonight, Juan Adams’s onslaught on Hardy’s fans ramped up:
“All his fans are in that below
average intelligence group, and they’re weirdos. They probably have some type
of frustration with women, and that’s why they like him, because he hits them.”
But it is not Hardy fans that Juan Adams will be fighting tonight at UFC San Antonio, it will be the man himself, a man who believes he has the makings of becoming the greatest heavyweight combat sports athlete of all time. Juan Adams tried to make sense of Hardy’s recent comments, which he considers every bit as asinine as the things he hears from Hardy’s fan base:
“Some of it’s confidence, the other part of it, to me, is he’s clearly not mentally all there,” Adams said of Greg Hardy. “We all know this. And on top of that, everything that comes out of his mouth comes from a juvenile sense of overconfidence, god complex comes to mind. But he’s clearly suffering from a very large disconnect with reality.”
Who do you believe will leave UFC San Antonio happy: Greg Hardy and his fans or Juan Adams?

They Feared You, I Don’t • MMA News
They Feared You, I Don’t • MMA News
When Juan Adams shows up to face Greg Hardy on the main card of tomorrow’s UFC San Antonio, he will be absent one thing Hardy’s other opponents possessed: fear. When you look at Greg Hardy’s four professional victories, there are a couple of things that come to mind when compared to upcoming opponent Juan Adams. One thing is the level of competition Hardy has faced whom Adams believes to be handpicked opponents. The other brings us right back to the subject of fear.
“If you look at it, most of his opponents have been afraid of him,” Adams told theScore MMA. “The one guy that wasn’t afraid of him, he didn’t know how to handle it.
“He outmatches everyone he’s
fought from a physical standpoint. He’s never fought an athlete like me. And
furthermore, most of the people he’s fought have been afraid to step in there
with him. At the time of all his fights, none of his opponents have had a
single win in the UFC, so I’m already better than all of them on that. “
Juan Adams is intelligent enough to
not completely discount Greg Hardy or his chances, as that could prove to be a
deadly mistake. Still, Adams sees Hardy’s path to victory to be both narrow and
jagged.
“Everyone at this level has a shot
to win You can’t completely count anyone out,” Adams conceded. “I respect the
fact that he’s getting in the cage, but in terms of him and what he’s going to
do, we know what he’s gonna do. He hasn’t changed his style up from his amateur
fights till now, so I don’t see him winning this fight.”
And who do you see winning this
fight? Juan Adams or Greg Hardy?

Chael Sonnen Believes Dana White Is Provoking Conor McGregor To Fight Jorge Masvidal • MMA News
Although Dana White said Conor McGregor will not be fighting Jorge Masvidal, Chael Sonnen thinks otherwise.
The former UFC fighter believes the UFC president is provoking McGregor into a fight by saying he won’t fight him and is too small for Masvidal. Thus, preventing a challenge to the Irishman to show that the size doesn’t mean anything and he can beat “Gamebred”.
“TMZ confronted Dana White and asked him straight up, Masvidal vs. Conor McGregor, yes or no? Dana White said, ‘no we’re not gonna do that fight. Jorge is too big for him.’ Everybody was just happy to accept that,” Sonnen said on his YouTube channel (as transcribed by BJPENN). “‘Okay we’ve got our answer, take Jorge off. I guess we gotta look back at Tony now. Hey is there anything to that ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone fight we heard about? Hey what’s Al Iaquinta up to?’ Guys, guys please, please don’t miss this. The biggest fight promoter in the history of promotion just went to TMZ, one of the biggest outlets aside from ESPN itself to cover this sport on a mainstream level. He picked his words very carefully and if any of you missed this, come on.
“‘No we’re not going to do that fight,’ is all anybody took away. They missed the second sentence of why. Because Jorge is too big. Do you think that’s gonna sit well with an ego like Conor McGregor? Do you think Conor McGregor does not know that Dana White just told the world that he personally believes that Jorge could beat Conor. And even offered up an excuse? Do you think that that story was out for more than five minutes before it got to Conor and he grabbed his phone and contacted Dana to say, ‘hey you think he’s too big for me?’ I can guarantee you that message from Conor to Dana has already happened.”
Whether or not Chael Sonnen is right is to be seen. But, he is confident that Dana White wants Conor McGregor to fight Jorge Masvidal.

Dana White Has Interest In Jon Jones vs. Israel Adesanya • MMA News
Count Dana White in on those who are interested in Jon Jones vs. Israel Adesanya. The two have gone back and forth with each other in interviews calling each other out, but given they fight in different divisions, a fight may not happen.
Should Israel Adesanya get past Robert Whittaker, the UFC president would have a ton of interest in the fight. He believes “The Last Stylebender” could be a dangerous opponent for Jones barring he wins the middleweight title in October.
“I do (have interest in that fight),” White said to TMZ Sports (h/t BJPENN). “But Israel needs to focus on (Robert Whittaker). He’s fighting a bad dude. He needs to worry about that fight. If he beats Robert Whittaker, he’s a very, very dangerous guy and a guy Jones needs to take serious.”
For the fight to happen, Adesanya will no doubt have to win the middleweight title where it could be a super fight between two champions. Should the fight actually happen, Jones would be the bigger fighter, as “The Last Stylebender” has weighed in under 185-pounds before.
Although it seems unlikely to happen, as talk of Jones going up to heavyweight continues by the day, Dana White has interest in the scrap.

UFC San Antonio Confidence Level

2: Minimum confidence

Ben Rothwell (36-11) vs. Andrei
Arlovski (27-18)
If the year was 2008, I would
predict without much hesitation that Andrei Arlovski would be the victor of
this fight, and I’d have been right. One decade and dozens of fights later, the
answer looks different.
The biggest difference between today and 11 years ago is Andre Arlovski cannot look less motivated than he has looked lately. Arlovski may resemble a butch college professor, but he has been performing more like a student who procrastinates until the day before the test and does just enough to get by. Sometimes he succeeds, other times he gets the ol’ “dig deeper” etched in the margins. Arlovski has devolved into something of a heavyweight point fighter who is great at surviving, but a ghost of himself at killing. The bright side for Arlovski is that I have some questions about where Ben Rothwell is at in his career trajectory. Three years and a USADA suspension later, Ben Rothwell returned to fight Blagoy Ivanov in March, and if that Ben Rothwell shows up to San Antonio, I’m expecting a possible split decision.
Since I truly believe you cannot get any less motivated than Andrei Arlovski, and since I’m not ready to write off Ben Rothwell’s killer instinct like I am Arlovski’s, I’m going to say that Rothwell’s motivation and awkward forward pressure can win a close decision, and if there is a knockout, it’s most likely to come from Rothwell since Arlovski’s last KO/TKO was four years and 11 months ago and Ben Rothwell has only been knocked out four times in 47 professional fights.
Prediction: Ben Rothwell
Confidence Level: 3/10
Alex Hernandez (10-2) vs. Francisco
Trinaldo (23-6)
Alexander Hernandez reminds me of
Conor McGregor. That’s right. I said it. He has the ability to convince you of
his impending success as much as any other fighter I can think of. Now that could
just be me talking, but I don’t think so. I believe his confidence helped make
him a favorite over Donald Cerrone two fights into his UFC career. And when he
speaks about how much he has learned from his loss to Cerrone while getting
super-specific on what is going to change, darn it, he’s got me again. He’s
once again convinced me with his words even more than his physical gifts that
this is his fight.
Alexander Hernandez’s fast starts was a gift that unraveled into a curse. In his last fight against Cerrone, he was overzealous, and lacked poise, grace, and an ability to adapt when in the Octagon with a cage general. But the way he described how he has remedied the problem has convinced me that he has grown from his loss and will now use his advantages to win this fight.
Specifically, those advantages are speed,
youth by 14 years, superior offensive grappling, and stance-switching skills
that will pause Trinaldo. Hernandez also has a superior ability to close the
distance as well, and I expect him to also have a crucial endurance edge over
Trinaldo.
Hernandez needs to watch out for
getting hit with Trinaldo’s dangerous overhand right, minimize getting hit to
the body, and, of course, never let his confidence budge.
Prediction: Alexander Hernandez
Confidence Level: 6/10
James Vick (13-3) vs. Dan Hooker (17-8)
Initially, this fight struck as a pick ’em, but after careful consideration, this is a confident selection.
Both fighters will be looking to
bounce back here. James Vick is coming off back-to-back losses, and Dan Hooker’s
last bout was the equivalent of two fights’ worth of punishment against Edson
Barboza. The beating Hooker was subjected to was so severe that it’s worth
wondering if he will ever be the same fighter again. Well, we will begin to get
our answers to that investigation this Saturday, and I don’t believe the first
sample will favor Hooker.
Dan Hooker’s length and reach (75)
is a major reason for his success in the UFC. In fact, Hooker has never faced
an opponent in the UFC where he did not have a reach advantage. Hooker will not
have any “genetic advantages” in this fight. James Vick will have the slight one-inch
reach advantage, but that advantage is a lot larger when you consider how
Hooker could be out of his comfort zone against a fighter who can match his
length. The closest thing Hooker came to that was against Marc Diakese in a
fight where Hooker struggled much more than his other victories. The first two
rounds were toss-ups before Hooker took the judges out of it with a submission
victory in the third round.
Hooker will be fighting James Vick
skill for skill in what I expect to be a striking display. In a standup fight,
I’m going to go with the more polished, experienced boxer who has the superior
movement. I do think Vick’s defense can be lackadaisical at times, but I don’t
see Hooker making him pay with it via knockout. Instead, I see Hooker trying to
bail himself out with a takedown when Vick is outboxing him, but I do not
believe his offensive grappling is better than Vick’s defensive grappling. One
thing we learned from Hooker’s last fight, though, is that he won’t go down
without a fight, but I do expect him to go down, even if it’s just on the
scorecards.
Prediction: James Vick
Confidence Level: 6.5/10
Greg Hardy (4-1) vs. Juan Adams
(5-1)
Show me a confident pick for this
fight and I’ll show you a liar. This is a very unpredictable grudge match with potentially
large implications for the heavyweight division.
The reason this fight could carry
such implications for the heavyweight division is because nobody really knows
how fast the promotion would push Greg Hardy if he gets a couple of wins. Greg
Hardy does not have the name of a Brock Lesnar by any stretch, but Lesnar still
taught us that we can’t predict how fast someone will get a push to the top if
he has strong name recognition and is a potential big draw, even as a monster
heel. Most fans will never admit this publicly, but I believe this is the most
anticipated fight on the card because of how unpredictable it is and because of
the spectacular job Juan Adams has done in hyping the fight long before it was even
made.
As for the fight itself, the biggest
questions to me are:
- How good is Juan Adams’s chin?
- What is Greg Hardy like on his back?
- Will the fight go past the first
round?
Without too much evidence either
way, I believe each of the above questions will favor Adams. I believe Adams
has a chin. He’s a big guy with a big head, and I’ve yet to see him rocked. Not
the most thorough or technical breakdown but admittedly, it’s a hunch.
I believe that even if Hardy is
decent on his back, his abilities will get worse as the fight progresses if
Adams is taking him down.
Finally, if the fight goes past the
first round, I expect Hardy to get weaker and Adams to get stronger, primarily
based on how Hardy began to slow down in his fight against Allen Crowder. I
believe if Hardy doesn’t get his way and run through Adams, he will look green,
fazed, and vulnerable for Adams to outgrind in the clinch or on the mat.
Something tells me that Adams will win the fight in a much more conservative fashion
than his incendiary trash talk.
Greg Hardy is more athletic than Adams, has greater puncher power, and appears to have very strong takedown defense. But I believe all of this will only play a factor in the first half of the fight, specifically the first round. If Adams’ chin survives Hardy’s blitz, I believe the test will then get passed down to Hardy, and my intuition is that Adams’ more extensive toolbox and gas tank will win the fight for him.
Prediction: Juan Adams
Confidence Level: 3/10
Aleksei Oleinik (57-12-1) vs. Walt
Harris (12-7)
We have a classic grappler vs.
striker fight here, which is always scary for the grappler when the grappler
isn’t a great takedown artist. But Oleinik doesn’t have to be Daniel Cormier
here. He just needs to be good enough at taking Walt Harris down and making
good use of his time if successful.
There is only one high-level grappler that sticks out to me in Walt Harris’ fight history, and it’s a fight where his opponent made short work of him. That’s the fight that I’m leaning on most for my prediction here. Fabricio Werdum made Walt Harris 0-1 against high-level grapplers, and it wasn’t at all competitive. All in all, I believe Olenik is much more experienced and consistent than Harris. Harris’ best chance is a first-round KO. He is definitely the superior striker and athlete to make that a live bet, but Oleinik has only been knocked out six times in his 70-fight MMA career and only has one TKO/KO loss in the UFC that wasn’t a doctor’s stoppage. And since all 12 of Walt Harris’ victories have been by knockout, it’s safe to say that if Oleinik can survive, he can win either by decision or, like Werdum, by dominant submission.
Prediction: Aleksei Oleinik
Confidence Level: 5/10
Rafael dos Anjos (29-11) vs. Leon
Edwards (17-3)
What I’m expecting here is a technical,
high-level, five-round fight. For Leon Edwards, you can expect him to rely
heavily on his popping jab, throw in some good leg kicks, and employ his
excellent distance control and risk/danger assessment ability. Edwards has a great
fight IQ, but I suspect as Edwards faces opponents towards the top of the
division like dos Anjos, his style will work against him, even if by a slim
margin.
Leon Edwards is on a very impressive
seven-fight winning streak, and his only loss in the past four years came to
the reigning champion, Kamaru Usman. But when I look at Leon Edwards, I do not
see a dominant winner, I see a dominant anti-loser. The two stoppages he’s had
in his five-fight winning streak came after the money hit the over. In the case
of Peter Sobotto, it came in the literal last second of the fight. The guy
knows how not to get beat, but I have my doubts on if that knowledge is going to
benefit him when moving up to swim with the sharks who’ve mastered how to win.
Rafael dos Anjos has had his share
of ups and downs, and he is not the finisher that he used to be, but he
definitely knows how to win. Leon Edwards is the type of guy who fights at and
then masters the pace of his opponent, but that will be difficult to do as the
level of competition increases. Both fighters have high cardio as well as high
fight IQ, so you can expect a chess match. But in that chess match, I believe
one fighter will have bigger moments and will chase the W more, and that is
what will impress the judges enough to give Rafael dos Anjos the narrow
decision, even if Leon Edwards outpoints him statistically.
I believe dos Anjos will throw slightly more volume, but Edwards will be more accurate. I think the volume combined with the bigger moments in the fight will be enough to convince the judges when it goes to the scorecards. I expect any grappling exchange between the two to result in a stalemate with slight undulations on either side and for dos Anjos’ aggression and big-fight experience to get the final say. Having said that, a split decision could definitely be right around the corner here.
Prediction: Rafael dos Anjos
Confidence Level: 2/10

Stephen Thompson Makes Prediction For Nate Diaz vs. Anthony Pettis
Stephen Thompson Makes Prediction For Nate Diaz vs. Anthony Pettis
Stephen Thompson has made his pick for the welterweight tilt between Nate Diaz and Anthony Pettis.
On Aug. 17, Diaz and Pettis will clash inside the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The 170-pound bout is set to serve as UFC 241’s co-main event. It’ll be Diaz’s first outing since Aug. 2016.
Thompson Picks Pettis To Beat Diaz
In Pettis’ last bout, he earned a second-round knockout victory over Thompson. “Wonderboy” appeared on Submission Radio to discuss Diaz vs. Pettis (via The Body Lock).
“Yeah man, I think that’s a very interesting fight,” Thompson said. “You got an explosive guy versus kind of like a marathon guy. Nate Diaz being the marathoner and Anthony Pettis being the more explosive guy, the sprinter. Anthony, he’s had some gas tank problems in the past. I think he might have fixed that. But he’s super fast and tricky. He’s caught some really good jiu-jitsu guys. He’s really good everywhere.”
Thompson continued:
“So is Nate. Nate takes a lot of damage but he’s very hard because he’s very long. He keeps his opponents at bay with his striking as you saw with Conor McGregor. Conor McGregor had a hard time catching him with his hands because he was so long. And he’s just relentless. Him and his brother take shots and they just keep coming forward.”
Thompson went on to praise Pettis for his speed and believes he can “out-trick” Diaz. As far as a prediction goes, Thompson is going with “Showtime.”
“It’s been a while since he’s [Diaz] fought. I think it’s been a few years. I think his last might have been Conor? Wow. So it’s been a while. Is Nate the same guy? We don’t know. So I’m going with my man Pettis.”

Myles Jury Signs Multifight Deal With Bellator MMA • MMA News
Myles Jury is headed to the Bellator cage.
The seven-year UFC veteran has signed a multifight deal with Bellator MMA according to a report from ESPN.com today. Jury is expected to debut for the promotion later this year.
‘Fury’ was once one of the lightweight division’s top rising stars. He was last seen losing a decision to Andre Fili at February’s UFC Phoenix. The loss was preceded by a TKO at the hands of former title contender Chad Mendes last July.
Jury was 15-0 heading into a January 2015 fight with Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. He lost an uninspired decision and moved down to featherweight later that year. Jury was submitted by Charles Oliveria in his 145-pound debut. That loss carries little shame, however, as “Do Bronx” has the most submission wins in UFC history. Jury still holds wins over Takanori Gomi, Diego Sanchez, and Michael Johnson
He won two fights over Mike De La Torre and Rick Glenn before his aforementioned two-fight skid.
Jury will reportedly move back up to lightweight in his Bellator debut.
